BRIDGEWATER, Mass. — Francisco Oliveira, a Taunton resident and graduate student at Bridgewater State College, was named the grand prize winner in the Center for Entrepreneurship Studies Business Plan Competition in May 2010. Oliveira teamed up with two members of the Armed Forces: Staff Sgt. James McCormack of Plymouth, who is also the associate director of marketing for the BSC School of Graduate Studies, and Mass. National Guard Maj. Ronald Cupples of Easton, to enter the CES Business Plan Competition. As the winners, the team received $2,500 for their start-up venture, Platoon Daddy, a web-based marketplace and review site of service providers who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

“We had seven teams compete as finalists this year for their share of the $4,000 to be awarded in start-up money,” said Dr. Shannon Donovan, DBA, MFS, co-director of the Center for Entrepreneurship Studies and associate professor, accounting and finance department. “It was a tough competition, but in the end, (Oliveira’s) plan was the most comprehensive in terms of planning, budgeting and marketing. The CES is very pleased to see the prize money go to such a deserving candidate.”

The Platoon Daddy team is currently using their winnings to set up the company’s initial cash flow and to contract with a database developer and website design company to help them kick-start the new business. They are also looking to build business relationships with local banks to help them grow the company.

“We would never be this far along in the launch of our new business venture had it not been for the CES Business Plan contest,” said Oliveira. “The free assistance and advice the CES provided along the way — in the form of workshops and individualized guidance — was instrumental in enabling me to write this plan effectively and finish this project in a timely manner.”

“And this support did not end when we won the contest; they have helped guide us along the path ever since,” McCormack said. “In June, Vicki Donlan, the CES Enterpreneur in Residence, connected us with the Small Business Community Development Clinic at UMass School of Law, where they helped us conduct business names research and counseled us on establishing the business as a corporation in the state of Massachusetts. Due to this guidance, our company should become an official S Corporation by the end of July.”

Oliviera and his Platoon Daddy partners are currently researching some alternate online names (for other branches of the military) and looking for strategic partners. They have already set up a blog, Twitter and Facebook pages, as well as a “place-holder” web site at platoondaddy.com. They hope to announce a soft, local launch by September.

CES will offer the business plan competition again next year and, in conjunction with the competition, will offer a series of workshops and one-on-one assistance developing the plans. CES is also hosting a Regional Business Expo on Nov. 2nd from 8 a.m. — noon, featuring guest speaker Brian Halligan, CEO and founder of HubSpot in Cambridge. Is Making Money Online As Easy As It Sounds? | Easy Online Jobs Review - Small Business Statistics

According to many websites and advertisements making money online is very easy to do. It seems that wherever one turns these days someone is trying to convince the masses how easy it is to earn an extra income. If you are a subscriber to a newsletter you will no doubt have received many emails from the gurus telling you that this product or that software is the next best thing to owning your own atm.

Terms like ‘avalanche of cash,’ ‘floods of traffic’ and ‘mountains of moolar’ are thrown around like Frisbees. Unfortunately there are hundreds of people out there who see these ads and fall for the million dollar sales copy. The so-called gurus make it sound so easy it seems so simple. Spend a few minutes in any marketing forum and you will see dozens of people complaining about how they signed up for this or that program a week ago and want to know why they have not made enough money to retire yet.

So who’s to blame for the 95% failure rate of online businesses? The old saying (There are two sides to every story) definitely applies here. Lets break it down into to categories.

These are the regular Joes looking for ways to make extra money. One of the reasons for the high failure rate is attitude. It may sound like an over simplification of a large problem but the evidence is clear. The average person surfing online wants to make money. In these times the modern culture is one of impatience. We know what we want and we want it now! Consequently if someone is ordering a burger they want it to their required standard as quickly as possible and unfortunately many people feel the same about starting an online business.

More often than not the attitude adopted is all-wrong from the start. Therefore the reason for failure is not that the business does not work, it’s the owner that does not work. The business owner went into the program with the wrong attitude i.e. expecting to be turning a profit within a couple of weeks so the work needed to grow the business was not put in. Almost everything else in life comes so quickly it is expected that profiting from a business will happen quickly as well.

There are far too many unscrupulous so-called marketers online literally lying through there teeth to make money. These are the guys that exaggerate beyond all comprehension. All over the Internet ads that claim you can make ($1000 in the next fifteen minutes) can be seen. These are the few that make it difficult for the majority by making promises that they cannot possibly keep.

Thankfully not all marketers are the same and the good do outweigh the bad. There are those who try to educate people as well as market to them. Educating consumers is vital. Any good marketers understands that it is imperative to get their visitors to fully understand what they will be getting into when they begin their businesses.

So. Who really is to blame for the high failure rate of Internet marketers? Honestly the fault lies with both consumers and markers. Building a strong profitable online home business takes time and a great deal of work. Do not fall for the hype. If it were that easy everyone would be rich and getting sun tanned on private secluded beaches.

If you are looking for ways to earn money fast, do not look online. Internet marketing is an industry just like any other, it must be learnt before it can be applied. If you are not willing to take the time and money needed to learn then it is not for you. Oh yes, money, do not think because a business is online it will be free to start-up and maintain. No business online will last without advertising. There are some great free ways to get exposure but at the same time there are some advertising techniques that are extremely powerful but costly.

The key to starting a business is to do some research, get as much information as possible before joining or parting with your money. Most importantly understand that becoming successful takes time, perseverance, determination and just a little luck.

'fighting Fit & Running' - Small Business Definition

Home Page – SoftwareeWorld – Interview ‘Fighting fit & running’ Mahindra Satyam’s CEO says he is clear about the leverages available to continue the transformation process..

“I want to be an end-to end-shop to enterprises — starting from their products to running the operations.”

C.P. Gurnani

CP Gurnani is a man in a hurry. The CEO of Mahindra Satyam walks into the air-conditioned room sweating from the intense Chennai heat, in which he has been interacting with his employees in open-air. He spares 30 minutes of his time for eWorld before rushing off to a dinner with his Game-Changers — handpicked middle management executives who he thinks would make a difference to the company in the days to come. Excerpts of the chat with eWorld:

How has the macro-economic environment impacted you these last 12 months, ignoring for now the impact of the former chairman’s financial crimes?

We have come out much better than expected. We saw the resilience of the organisation and the desire to rejuvenate and be a fighter — we call it the spirit of Satyam — it differentiated us and allowed us to bounce back. It wasn’t easy that the former senior management was involved in financial crimes, that our associates tried to catch falling swords and did not even know if they would meet their own EMIs in the short term. That we have been able to retain about 380 clients and regain their confidence, and book another 50 plus clients is another testimonial for us.

The improving economy is not yet a tailwind for us. We have to show more hunger, more willingness and knock on more doors to get back. The overall softening up of the economy is an opportunity. To convert our headwinds to tailwind would take a lot of effort.

Which means your efforts to get back on track would cost you more than it would your peers?

Our cost of sales would definitely be marginally higher than the big Indian IT players. But we are on a three-year transformation journey — We have been cash flow positive. We don’t have to dip into the treasury to get new money to run our business. We are investing $100 million in Chennai and Hyderabad to set up campuses and buildings. That the board cleared this investment is testimonial that this company is strong and running.

As to our operating Metrics — SG&A and others — we are definitely marginally higher than Big Indian majors.

First the company said that it would restate financials for seven years before the former chairman’s crimes came to light. Then, that commitment came down to three years, and now you say you would restate starting 2008-09. Why leave it to CBI to restate earlier financials?

It’s a very complex thing, involving the CBI, SFIO, various stock exchanges around the world, with documentation not fully available and forensics of each and every entry being scrutinised. It’s a tedious process. We will come out of it by September 30 this year. For the last three quarters, we have been cash flow positive and doing well. We did have to go through phases such as the virtual pool. (The company put 9,000 of its employees in a virtual bench, of which a third were re-absorbed and the rest were either out-placed with other IT companies or left on their own). But we are back in the game, and in what I call the third phase. The first phase was when we were in ‘ICU’, starting January 7, 2009 (when news of the scandal broke) till June that year (when Tech Mahindra took over the company); we were in the ‘recovery room’ in the second phase till December 2009; and now we are fighting fit and running.

But if you don’t restate for the entire period of seven years, isn’t Damocle’s sword hanging above your, the CEO’s, neck?

I am very clear as to what I should worry about as a CEO — I know my liabilities, I know what liabilities I am contesting, I know what cash I have in the bank. If my balance sheet shows I made a profit of Rs 400 crore four years ago, what does it tell me? Today, I am running a business for which I need an opening balance. Even as an investor, you only need to know the net worth of the company today, whether I am fit and have a strategy for future growth, and whether operating metrics are equal to or better than competitors’.

The annual report is for transparency. After running this company for four quarters now, I know what my financial assets are, I have a fair assessment of liabilities, of my business and of my growth strategy, what my differentiators are and what leverages are available to continue my transformation journey.

And, I don’t have to put out my hand for money to anybody.

With money in hand now, what gaps do you wish to fill in your offerings, through acquisitions?

If wishes were horses, I would acquire in the engineering services space. Our team here is very competent and they could do a lot more (with the aid of acquisitions). It’s a growth industry.

Two, I would acquire in high-end, platform BPO companies and three, augment my reach and capability in healthcare.

I can’t make an acquisition now because, technically, we are in the silent period. It’s only a wish list right now. I am now a custodian of shareholders’ money. If I can’t communicate to shareholders, we can’t spend their money. Only after the restatement of financials would we make an acquisition.

Likewise for the hiving off of the animation business for which you have the permission of the CLB (Company Law Board)?

We would more or less time it with our results. We want to be very transparent with shareholders and to honour the spirit of transparency and communication.

Our focus will be on enterprises and industry domain — making films is not a domain that fits into my four strands — enterprise business solutions, platform BPO, infrastructure management and engineering services. I want to be an end-to end-shop to enterprises — starting from their products to running the operations.

You talked about your three-year journey…?

Our first year, ended recently, was to stabilise operations and right-size it. The second year would be to demonstrate growth, for which we are investing in technology and innovation. The third year is for sharper focus on operating metrics.

Given the backdrop of the company’s earlier fall, how do you hope to retain talent and attract new manpower? We heard of an exodus onsite for you…

Exodus? We had to right-size the company. So exits were part of the plan. My attrition is comparable to most of the majors. We will be deciding on increments and promotions for our employees next month — July. We are hiring 8,000 people this year starting April 2010. About 3,000 are already in, 30 per cent of which are freshers. We visited Ivy League business schools in India and the joining ratio was 85 per cent. In fact, you should not even be interviewing me but speaking to people who have joined us, reposing their faith in us…

‘I chose MSat because …’

At Gurnani’s insistence, eWorld met a recruit, new for the company, but with some eight years of experience behind him – Siddharthan Panneerselvam. Having worked for five out of those eight years for another Indian IT services major in the US, Panneerselvam did a one-year management programme at IIM-Ahmedabad before joining Mahindra-Satyam two months ago. Here’s why Panneerselvam, among others, chose Mahindra-Satyam:

What areas did you work in before you did your management diploma?

I handled delivery of software service, as well as client engagements, for a manufacturing customer in the US. In fact, I was struck by an individual at the client premises who went back to B-School with some 11-plus years of work experience. I thought it wise to do so, too. He was a Kellogg’s alumnus — I saw the difference in his thought process. He was a mentor.

Why Mahindra-Satyam (MSat)? Did you have other offers on hand?

I did attend the first round of interviews with other IT firms — both domestic as well US-based companies with large presence in India. But I ultimately want to be an entrepreneur. And even while being employed; I didn’t want to be lost in a huge organisation. If I went back to my earlier employer, I am sure I would be lost among its mass of employees. Here, I have direct access to the CEO. That is important for me.

I chose Satyam because it’s an opportunity. I see it as a Phoenix rising from the ashes but it needs good hands to push it along. I want to be part of that journey. — KBK

The Mahindra name, of course, mattered. If Satyam had not been taken over by such a respectable name, then aspirants would obviously think twice. Our professors too were of the opinion that here is a growth story waiting to happen.

What did friends and family say about your decision to join Mahindra-Satyam?

We had intense debates about this within our class. I actually started off arguing against joining Satyam. My point was, why would anyone refuse offers from outside where the rewards are similar and the risks are lower, not to mention a settled life-style. The points that came in favour of choosing MSat impressed me. One point was if I fail, I still don’t have much to lose. But if I succeed in contributing significantly to its rise, the upsides are high. It’s much like being part of a start-up. The older structure has broken down and a new structure is emerging. I want to be part of the team that defines the structure and the future of the organisation. In effect, I was more convinced about joining MSat, than convincing in my arguments against joining the company!

I am now with the BFSI vertical, with responsibilities in pre-sales and solution offerings. I wanted to get into sales. But entering a new vertical, I need knowledge of pre-sales, which sort of blends everything. Once I am equipped, I would like to try my hand at sales.

Starting Small Business? - Starting A Small Business

I’ve been thinking of starting a small business. My three ideas are either a fashion clothing store (mostly for women), a jewelers business, or a flower shop (selling exotic and beautiful flowers) and other plants. A fashion clothing store seems nice but there are other retail stores that probably have cheaper clothing. There are some really nice evening gowns, and other clothing that retail stores don’t have a lot of. This would be fairly expensive to start considering lots of the clothing is expensive to buy.A small jewelers business would probably be popular since everyone buys jewelry expecially around the holidays and to have something new to wear. Private jewelers are known to usually have better quality than the large jewelry chains. But the equipment, making molds, and cutting gems to make custom and unique quality jewelry and buying the gold, and other metals would be very expensive for a startup business.A flower store would probably be nice. It could also have a small giftshop area for candy, some floral jewelry, and would be probably the least expensive to start up conidering flowers are popular especially for gardens or for Valentine’s Day.I am thinking of going with the flower shop since it is more cost effective but it might not be as popular as other businesses. Do you think people would be more likely to buy from a fashion clothing store or a flower shop? The location of the business would be somewhere in Florida or Texas so geographic region can factor into your response.

Concord Solar Company Supplying Panels To Cabarrus Bank & Trust - Small Business Statistics

Concord startup SBM Solar Inc. has landed its first commercial project since Underwriter Laboratories certified its lightweight polymer panels for use in February.

The $68,000 installation project, handled by Charlotte’s Argand Energy Solutions, will go on the roof of the Cabarrus Bank & Trust branch in Concord. Tim Antoszyk, sales manager for SBM, says the installation involves 54 panels. The small project has a 7.6-kilowatt capacity for direct current, and nearly 6 kilowatts of alternating current.

The power will be sold to Concord Electric Systems, the municipal power authority in the city.

Ken Yelton, executive vice president and chief operating officer for Cabarrus Bank & Trust, says the lender saw an opportunity to get involved in green technology and help a local business as well.

SBM founder Osbert Cheung says the bank has done more than just give SBM its first commercial order. He says Cabarrus Bank & Trust is working with the company to secure the Small Business Administration loan SBM needs to put its production on a truly commercial scale.

And the bank has provided an interim loan that has allowed the company to order a $500,000 piece of equipment Cheung says will enable SBM to produce panels four times faster than it can now.

“That equipment will come in next month,” he says.

It’s been a long slog for Cheung and SBM in many ways. Late year, the SBA rejected a $1.3 million loan application from the company. Cheung then started working with Cabarrus Bank & Trust on getting a scaled-back, $600,000 SBA loan.

That will allow him to repay the interim loans from the local bank and purchase some additional equipment.

But Cheung says the company is having to turn down work in the meantime. The problem is that many projects require more panels than SBM can produce in a reasonable amount of time with its current equipment and seven-employee staff.

The company can produce about 25 panels per week. The new equipment will kick that up to about 100 per week.

But that is still too slow for many projects. Cheung says he was approached recently by a customer looking for 1,800 panels. “We avoid large orders like that because we cannot produce at that speed,” he says.

While the new machine will help, production on a truly commercial scale will require the purchase of a laminator to apply a polymer covering on the cells.

That covering differentiates SBM’s product from standard solar cells. Most of those are covered with glass. The glass gives the cells a rigid base, but it also increases their weight.

Cheung views his lighter cells as ideal for rooftop applications.

That’s how Cabarrus Bank & Trust intends to use its panels. And Cheung says he is in talks with the Carolina Panthers about the possibility of a small solar installation at Bank of America Stadium.

Larger orders will have to wait until he can find an investor to help with the costs of the laminator.

“We can handle projects with panels in the hundreds,” he says. “But we really can’t do a thousand panels or more right now.”
